A friend's hard drive had crashed (turns out to have been infected with 3 viruses), but I was able to save the data by removing the hard drive and attaching it to another computer through a "USB to IDE or SATA Drive Adapter". FYI, there was a plastic adapter on the hard hard drive which I didn't realize could come off, and I thought I would have to buy a proprietary SATA adapter, until someone showed me that I could just pull it off, as shown in this clip. After I saved the data, I was able to restore the hard drive to its original factory settings and reinstall the data. Important - always remove all power sources from the laptop, such as battery and power adapter, before removing internal parts.
